ARTIST STATEMENT: JANE THE BOSS

Below is an artist statement by Brad of his most recent finished portrait, the first in a series called The Three Ladies. The process behind this one was very unique, using collage, brainstorming and internet surfing to find references.

The Three Ladies were all one page, but I decided to put them on seperate pages. Yvonne helped cut around them and I stuck them down on an A3 page. I chose A3 because it's bigger - more space to draw a background. I think Jane is in an office, Joyce is in a cafe and June is in a dress shop. I used the ipad - the one I'm talking to you on - to find photos of an office with a man sitting at his desk in front of big windows. When I found the man - I thought that's it, that's the one I want. Then I saved the picture to my photos.

I started with pencil sketching, I drew the background, then I drew the man. Then I added watercolour. I think the man is her worker and she's the boss. The buildings were difficult to draw - the tops of them. But the rest of it - easy! I'm happy I finished this painting. I might do the cafe one next…
