INDEPENDENT LIVING

One of Brad’s central goals is independent living. There are many facets that contribute towards living an independent life for Brad, but one major achievement has been creating a space that is completely his own. This blog post is all about Brad’s apartment!

Where I used to live, I had a tiny room - you couldn’t swing a cat in there! The door almost hit the end of the bed. Now I still live with family, but I have my own separate space. It’s nice and roomy! I worked with the team to design it. Toby and Clare helped me pick out and arrange furniture. This art desk is my brother’s table, it’s very special to me. The yellow lounge chair I picked out myself from Ikea. It just caught my eye. When I saw it I thought, ‘That’s it. That’s mine.’ I sat down and just slumped back into it. At Ikea, I also chose my bright red kettle. I also like my microwave. It talks to me! I thought it was Mike when it first spoke! I like when it speaks to me, telling me when it’s open. It has easy buttons to press.

This apartment has changed my life. I can go anywhere and I don’t have to worry about disturbing my family all the time. They do their thing and I do mine. If I need space I just close that door. I like it. My favourite areas of this apartment are my computer, my coffee corner and the pathway where I can drive my scooter along. Above my computer I have lots of knick knacks and photos from my life. I feel a bit teary when looking up at all the memories.
