BEHIND THE SCENES WITH BRAD
Brad is working hard on building the background for Joyce the waitress. Joyce is the third and final piece in Brad's Three Ladies Series. Here are his thoughts live as he painted.
This is very good art. The tables and chairs look bare at the moment, all I can see are the black legs. The chair legs are wonderful, look at all the black lines. I've been using the little brush as an out-liner. People are next to add and I'll be the barista. I might add in people sitting, me behind the counter, a person coming through the door and the manager. (Joyce has been demoted from manager to waitress today.) Following these remarks, Brad proceeded to take his own reference photos for these characters, using Ali and himself as the models!
You know I used to be a barista, when I was younger, a little tiny barista! While I was there an elderly couple came up to me and the woman went through her purse and gave me a five dollar tip!
Brad began musing who he should draw into the picture next. I might put my sister in there, on another table. And Mike outside coming in through the door. There's me of course out the back. I've already got Ali on the first table with her laptop. All I gotta do now is the green blackboard, then outside the windows of course.
During this session Yvonne taught Brad a few pointers about colour theory. Brad compared the bright white of a ceramic plate with the darker 'white' of the cafe wall in the photograph. I can see that the wall is actually bluey-white, with a very grey ceiling, not white!
Brad's team is very proud of the merging of his narrative and visual skills in this series. We are excited to see Brad's enthusiasm as he continues to explore and experiment!
